Public Safety & Scientific

Diver and Instructor Courses

  • Surface Supplied Air Full Facemask/Demand Dive Helmet

In recent years it’s become more and more apparent for the need to train non-commercial divers such as public safety and scientific divers in the use of surface supplied air diving equipment utilizing full facemasks and demand type diving helmets. Dan Crowell and TDI have worked closely to develop this new specialty course designed to meet these rising needs. The course is designed to instruct existing public safety or scientific divers in the basic use of surface supplied equipment utilizing a full facemask or demand type diving helmet for purposes of public safety, law enforcement and scientific research.

This course is designed specifically toward surface supplied air diving with the use of dive helmets and/or full facemasks for non-commercial diving purposes only.  The scope of training is to simply familiarize and train preexisting certified public safety, or scientific divers who have the appropriate level of training and experience in the use of this equipment, including the proper operations, safety procedures, maintenance, and of team and self safety and rescue skills.

Any dive operation requires an extensive consideration for safety and there are no exceptions here.  All aspects of this curriculum fall within federal guidelines and OSHA dive regulations.

This surface supplied air full facemask and helmet course is a proprietary Deep Explorers, Inc. specialty course sanctioned by Technical Diving International (TDI), one of the largest International dive training agencies in the world.  Each candidate, after completion of the curriculum will be issued a certificate of completion as well as a certification card that can be use to identify the level of training for that individual in the field.  Though the course is based on a four man dive team, all members will be trained at the same level and in all aspects of the dive team.  This means that any divers who holds this certification will be able to join any other dive team trained at this same level without additional training, and in many cases this certification should have reciprocity allowing the certification holder to move outside their unit and be able to join other dive teams trained by other organizations as well.

The course requires a minimum of a four (4) man dive team. Additional candidates can be added to any course up to a maximum of twelve (12) with additional confined and open water dive days to be added as necessary.

Based on the four (4) man dive team the course requires one full eight (8) hour day of academics.  This will include, dive physics and physiology review as well as those that pertain to surface supplied diving fallowed by a final exam. Additional time will be added to accommodate team and candidate requirements.

To familiarize the team and individual divers with the equipment before heading into open water at least one day of confined (pool) water training is required for setup, safety procedures, use, and emergency drills. Additional time or days will be added with the addition of candidates over the four (4) man minimum.

After successful completion of the final exam and confined water drills the team will move into the open water phase of the courses. Each dive team member will be require to operate at each position within the dive team with a minimum of at least two hours in water time.

Based on a four (4) man dive team, the course will run over a minimum of at least four (4) days if the dive team and candidates are fully prepared and meet all of the prerequisites prior to course dates.
